Eleven-year-old, Devin Huang, is a Grade 6 student at Sacred Heart School of Halifax, and has been studying with Lynn Stodola (Fountain School of Performing Arts) since 2016. Since Devin was introduced to piano at the age of seven as a student of Mr. Gregory Watters, he has shown great enthusiasm towards piano performance, both solo and chamber.
Devin has captured numerous awards. He is one of the winners of the 2017/18 Chebucto Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, an honour for which he has won the privilege of performing with the Orchestra. He most recently placed first, winning a gold medal, at the 2017 Canadian Music Competition National Finals in Gatineau, PQ, in his age category. At the 2017 Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival his awards included: first place in Piano Solo (Chopin – Senior), first place in Piano Solo (Bach – 16 years and under), and first place in Piano Sonata (Junior), and was recommended by both junior and senior adjudicators to perform at the Festival’s Gala night as Junior Pianist. At the Gala, he received the Rising Star Award in memory of Dr. Gordon Murray, and was chosen to represent the Halifax Festival in the Junior Piano and Chamber Music categories at the Provincial Finals.
Devin has received tremendous support from the music community. He was honoured to receive the 2017 Halifax Ladies’ Music Club Award as well as a scholarship from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust in 2017. The generosity of the music community inspires him to help others too.
Devin’s other interests besides piano include math, chess, skiing, swimming, listening to classical music, and studying his Rubik’s Cubes!
Devin will perform the 2nd & 3rd Movements from Piano Concerto No.21 in C major, K.488 (Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus) on Saturday, April 21st, 2018.
