Community

The orchestra is part of a larger network of local community groups that contributes to the cultural base that makes the Halifax Regional Municipality a pleasant place to live and work.

Our community program is varied and includes charitable donations, fundraising concerts, commissions to local composers, complimentary tickets to seniors’ residences, concerts in smaller communities around the province, and solo opportunities for young and promising Nova Scotia musicians.

Our most recent community involvement includes playing seasonal music in malls throughout HRM where we bring live music played by our orchestra musicians to individuals who might not ordinarily attend a concert of live classical music.

Road trips

The orchestra performs several concerts each year, and strives to present one of these in a smaller community in Nova Scotia as a way of bringing symphonic music to Nova Scotians outside of the Halifax metropolitan area. Local musical groups are invited to perform as guests or in joint performance with the orchestra. Previous concert locations have included Truro, Lunenburg, Wolfville, and Saulnierville.

Kiwanis Music Festival prizes

The Chebucto Symphony Orchestra sponsors two prizes in the Kiwanis Music Festival, held every March in Halifax. The Anne Ogden Memorial Prize, commemorating the life of an early player and Board member, is awarded to the player of a stringed instrument. The Chebucto Prize has been awarded to provide a playing opportunity for a solo performer. Many of those who have received this prize have gone on to successful careers in music.

Messiah From Scratch

The orchestra participates in the Messiah From Scratch event annually on December 27th. Members of the community are welcome to come and play or sing the Messiah from scratch. This popular event sells out annually.

We are always open to opportunities to work with other musical groups.
